Introduction to Xian Yun Academy
Xian Yun Academy of the Arts California was founded in 2010 by a group of Bay Area parents with a passion for traditional arts and a wish for children to receive a well-rounded education. Our founders believe that the best education for today’s young people is to enrich their lives with the beauty of traditional arts and the values of traditional culture such as responsibility, respect, honesty, kindness, empathy, and tolerance.
Along with the training in traditional arts, Xian Yun Academy (formerly known as Fei Tian Academy) provides students with rigorous academic and prepares students for 4-year colleges. Research has shown that traditional art training can develop in students qualities that help them in learning academic subjects, such as being more focused and self-disciplined, being more persevered, thus will improve their academic mindset and lead to good academic behavior and great academic achievements.
Our first campus was located in Potrero Hill San Francisco. In 2015 Xian Yun Academy purchased the current campus on Page Street next to the Golden Gate Park in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.
Xian Yun’s unique Whole-Child Education Model has demonstrated success. Xian Yun Academy received WASC candidacy status by WASC in the same year as its first open its door in 2010 and received a full accreditation four years later. The 2014 WASC visiting committee report stated that what the school offers “ is extraordinary, and the San Francisco Bay Area has a treasure in the work that is Fei Tian CA” (now Xian Yun Academy).
The small class sizes of Xian Yun (fewer than 15 students) allow students to receive full attention from their teachers, and the positive and supportive environment motivates students to learn. Through dedication, hard work, and the support of caring directors, teachers, staff, and fellow students, our students grow into responsible young adults. They do well and often excel in whatever they put their heart into.
Xian Yun’s students have records of great learning results measured by three indicators: GPA, Standardized Test Scores, and College Readiness.
More than 90% of Xian Yun Academy students’ grades are above proficiency in all subjects (Math, English, Social Sciences, Science, and Chinese). For four years in a row, we’ve had a 100%-graduation rate and a 100%-acceptance rate into 4-year colleges or universities. There are a total of 25 students graduated from Xian Yun Academy’s high school program. Our graduates have been accepted by top universities such as NYU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC San Diego, Pratt Institute, Parsons, SAIC (the School of the Art Institute of Chicago), University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Bart College at Simon’s Rock/Columbia University, CUNY, ArtCenter at Pasadena, American University, Purdue University, George Washington University, Maryland Institute College of Art, and the University of Michigan at Ann Harbor. Xian Yun Academy graduates are doing well in their colleges with GPAs above 3.5 (data collected before summer 2016).
In Xian Yun Academy’s short existence, our students have achieved top honors in dance, fine art, music, literature, and sports competitions.
