The summer program at Xian Yun Academy of the Arts California offers a variety of dance, visual arts, and language programs. Through guidance and support from professional artist-educators, students will be challenged to learn new skills while developing aesthetic sophistication in a positive and supportive environment. Students attend our programs not only for the high quality and rigor of our academic and art classes, but for the exciting social experiences. Our students come from all around the world, and form many new friendships in the Xian Yun community.

Ballet Programs

June 17 – June 28
Age 5-10

The well-known sophistication, grace, and elegance of ballet are qualities that Xian Yun’s dance program instills within our students. Ballet’s technical precision also outlines an attentiveness to details that produces artistic beauty and can be applied to many areas of work and daily life. The summer ballet program enhances students’ ballet technique, flexibility, and strength in a fun and focused environment.

Students will also explore traditional camp activities such as drawing, painting, and clay molding.

You will be challenged in this ballet intensive program to reach your maximum potential. This program focuses on improving technique, flexibility and strength as well as expanding students’ repertoire while maintaining a fun, focused environment. Drawing from the Vaganova Method, we incorporate barre work, center work, and classical variations for a well-rounded learning experience.

This summer program aims to develop movement skills, enhance a sense of self-expression, introduce rhythm & music, and foster cultural education through traditional folk stories and dances. We offer one & two-week sessions.

Chinese Dance Program

Program I
Young Artist Day Camp – Chinese Dance

Session I July 8 – 19
Session 2: July 22 – Aug 2
Age 5-10

Students will take classes in Chinese dance, tumbling, ballet, and folk dance in this two-week camp. The camp culminates in a showcase where students will demonstrate class routines and 1-2 short dance pieces. Each day, we will spend part of the afternoon doing traditional camp activities, such as arts and crafts, playing outdoors in Golden Gate Park, and playing team building games.

The goal of this intensive program is to bring students to the next level of their dance technique, flexibility, and tumbling skills. Student must be enrolled in Xian Yun’s year-round Chinese Dance program and have successfully passed Level 3 to attend this program. Non-Xian Yun students with prior dance training may audition to join; please contact us for more details.

Visual Art Program

Classes in Drawing and Painting

What you will learn in this class:
Students will gain a solid understanding of 3D forms, and the skills necessary for creating 3D forms on paper.
 
During the two weeks intensive course, students with little or no prior training will quickly master basic drawing skills. Meanwhile, students with foundational skills in the drawing will further refine their artistry through projects in realism. The class will also include outdoor drawing activities in order to further improve students’ artistic observational skills.
In painting class, students will learn basic color theory and apply this knowledge directly in their own artworks. Beginning students will gain fundamental skills in 3D painting, and advanced students will further enhance their realistic painting techniques. Regardless of skill level, classes will allow the students to efficiently improve their skills within a short amount of time.

Clay Modelling

What you will learn in this class:

The class aims to expose students to the art of modeling and encourage children’s imaginations and creativity. Students will gain experience in working with several types of clay media, such as air-dry modeling clay, air-dry colored clay, and polymer clay. The class will incorporate 2D and 3D designs, and students will enjoy various forms of hands-on craft projects, such as cups, bowls, animal sculptures, and jewelry-making.

None.

Mandarin Chinese Program

This program enhances structured language learning with a plethora of creative and practical activities. Students will improve their Chinese speaking and listening skills, also learn to read and write Chinese characters.  Other parts of the program include Chinese dance, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese culinary art, Chinese painting, and Chinese culture and traditions. In addition, our immersion environment allows students to gain Chinese language skills and cultural knowledge in a natural way.
